Listen, my son by Simon Johnson (b.1975) is a setting of words from the opening of the prologue of the Rule of St Benedict, words that capture the essence of Benedictine spirituality. This text is punctuated by a three-fold iteration of the Suscipe me, Domine (Uphold me, Lord) chant, each time at a higher pitch, which directly corresponds to the ceremony at the Solemn Profession of a Benedictine monk. The voice part is supported by an organ accompaniment which incorporates the Læta dies melody, the Sequence for St Benedict, sung at Masses in honour of St Benedict. Listen, my son was first performed during Mass at Buckfast Abbey on the Feast of St Benedict, 11 July 2024.
